It's been over a month now (40 days) since the successful ex-Robert Morris head coach Mike Rice left the Moon Township program to lead Rutgers in the ultra-tough Big East. Rice, who was 73-30 at RMU in three seasons and led the Pittsburghers to two NCAA invites will find the going a bit tougher in New Jersey as Rutgers, 5-13 in the BE and 15-17 overall last year has suffered through four consecutive dismal seasons.
With Rice in charge, however, the outlook has brightened. I have kept tabs on Rutgers news in the NYC media outlets and everyone is smiling about the change. Losing its top player, Mike Rosario (16.7ppg) to transfering to Florida, it is thought by some that the former NJ High School Player of the Year was a major part of the problem. Anyways, life goes on. Returning is tough forward Jonathan Mitchell (11.8/6.1) and Henrietta New York product sophomore Dave Miller (9.2/5.9)
Mike Rice is a top recruiter and knows the New York metro/Philadelphia area well. Two very good forwards from St Benedict Prep have been signed, and a terrific prospect expected to go to Georgetown has decommitted in favor of Rutgers. Rice will attract quality athletes, for sure.
Mike Rice's work ethic (hey, he's a Pittsburgher!), his leadership, his prior success as a coach (scared the begeebers out of Villanova in the NCAAs, he did!), and his winning personality will, I believe, get the job done at Rutgers. In this short time he's been there I have almost a page of notes on him and his charges. We'll be keeping an eye on him as the season nears!
